She’s baaaack.

Our chef’s back is back on track and she is back to work. High on codeine she tweaked the menu a bit. Here’s the full menu:

sweet potato + apple soup.
escarole + edamame salad w/pecorino.

garlic shrimp.
country pâté with tomato jam.
roasted beets with goat cheese + pistachios.

chickpea tagine with harissa.
marinated spearfish with miso slaw.

alliterative compliments.

I walked into the restaurant at noon yesterday to bad news.  “My back has gone out and you guys will be on your own today.”  Our chef left us the menu and left us to cook.
It was an abbreviated menu, but we were on heightened alert without our mom watching over our every move.  It [...]

decisions, decisions.

Before I moved to Seattle I played a week of make-believe. I started saying it out loud first. As in, “I’m moving to Seattle in the fall.” And then I started telling people. Gradually, at first, but confidently. I hadn’t yet bought a plane ticket or bought guide books or [...]

in loco parentis.

For eight days Seattle saw no rain. For eight days we had gorgeous blue skies, mercury in the fifties, and perfect parking spots immediately outside my front door. For eight days I lived in paradise.
And moments after dropping mom and dad off at the airport, seconds after hopping on I-5 North, I heard [...]

parental guidance suggested.

My apartment wasn’t real until my mom gave it her stamp of approval.  My car wasn’t a lemon until my dad tinkered with the fuse and checked it out.  And my restaurant wasn’t any more than Denny’s until my parents sat down to a six-course tasting menu.
They arrived at 9.30 to a packed restaurant.   [...]

oh, canada.

Three hours north and what a world of difference that makes.  Miles are now kilometers, dollars are now dollars, and all gas is sold at 112.6/liter.  About is now aboot, been is bean, and here is Vancouver.  But food is food and that’s what I do, on either side of the border.
Dinner was Indian.  Great [...]

love is in the air.

We should have caught on when the phone started ringing off the hook last week.  We should have understood when caller after caller asked if we were making an exception in our ‘no reservations’ policy for Valentine’s Day.  We should have been clued in when rumors trickled in through the grapevine that business would be [...]

running on empty.

I started work on Monday at 9am…and I haven’t really stopped working since.
And as an ode to my visual voicemail (shoutout, iPhone), here’s my visual week of hell:

the chef returns.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program…
Gone are the days of normal hours, the stress-free life of a retail employee, the joys of a predictable job.  My chef is back from Chicago and I am back to work in the kitchen.
Chicago was cold, the food was amazing, and the menu inspiration…well, you judge.
roasted cauliflower [...]

February 11, 2008

in a land far, far, away.

I walked into the restaurant to pick up our food. A yellow curry with brown rice, pad thai with potatoes and peanuts. It was ready and waiting for me and I saw my name clearly written on the ticket.
I waited as he ran the credit card and glanced over the bill one [...]
