Hi, my name is Rachel and I am addicted to Diet Coke matinee movies.
…
It started out innocently. I was bored, there was a good movie playing in 30 minutes. So what if it was 10am? But once I was bitten by the morning movie it was hard to shake off. The next time I was [...]

i(am)Phone.
In high school I wrote a prescient (pronunciation, please) college application essay wherein I predicted my move to Seattle and my career as a cook. I had a goal and I wasn’t afraid to hop on a plane, move across the country, and make it happen.
Sure, I scripted my Seattle horoscope in 2001. It took [...]

…it does a body good.
You can judge someone by the contents of their soul, the contents of their closet, the contents of their bank account.
…but the contents of their refrigerator? Oh, you’d be surprised.
All day long I confit meat and pan-fry gnocchi. I mince shallots and reduce stocks. I glaze scallops and julienne carrots. And when I come home [...]

if you can’t stand the heat…
Models don’t cook. Hell, they don’t even eat. So when I took Mitch’s advice and rented the ‘made for tv’ version of Bourdain’s book, Kitchen Confidential, I thought they’d swapped the dvd.
Kitchen Confidential, the series, aired briefly (very briefly) in 2005. It attempts to fictionalize Bourdain’s uncensored peek into the hot, messy, [...]

pork and beans.
The menu stayed the same this week; we’re closing for the weekend and it’s a shame to roll out a new menu for only a few days. So prep yesterday was simple. Just like the good ol’ days where I could close my eyes and cut/chop/dice from memory. I walked into work, changed into my [...]

Live, from New York, it’s…
…a guest columnist!
We interrupt our regularly scheduled program to bring you a guest columnist. She traveled 3,000 miles, spent 6 hours asleep on an airplane, and schlepped one small suitcase through baggage claim to write this for you. So give it up for my sister, Julie, native New Yorker and Seattle newbie.

how the other half eats.
My second visitor has arrived, but she’ll always be #1 to me. Aww, cue the violins, sappy music, and teary B-roll of sisterly bonding. My sister is here.
So far we’ve seen Americana in action (read: bought out the local Walmart of their Diet Coke), enjoyed some of Seattle’s finest (read: drank cappuccinos), walked [...]

weirdos.
People out here are weird. They fall on the outer edges of the Bell Curve of Life. Guys at work wear kilts when reporting to duty. Piercings are so heavy they slow down your gait. Bumper stickers plaster cars with messages of peace, love, and biodiesel.
So I was disappointed to see this freakish fashion statement [...]
